Your final summer t-shirt checklist

Every summer, millions of people buy t-shirts that look great in the store, feel reasonable in the changing room, and become wearable rags by August. The problem is almost never the fit or the colour. It is almost always the fabric — and the fact that no one taught you how to evaluate it.

1
Step One

Start With the Label — But Read It Right

The care label on a t-shirt is the single most honest piece of information on the garment. "100% Cotton" sounds reassuring, but cotton spans an enormous quality range. "100% cotton" without a specification is almost always the cheaper end. "Polyester blend" is a red flag in summer clothing. If you want the real thing, browse ATTRUE's 100% Supima cotton t-shirts — every label is fully specified.

"100% cotton" is not a quality guarantee. It is a starting point. The type of cotton is everything — and brands that don't specify it are usually hiding something.

Step Two

The 7 Questions to Ask Before You Buy

Before you hand over your money for a summer t-shirt, run through these seven questions. They take thirty seconds and will save you from a summer of disappointment.

1
What type of cotton is it — or is it synthetic?

If the label says polyester, nylon, or "performance blend" — put it back. If it says cotton, ask what kind. Supima or Pima means extra-long staple. Anything unspecified is likely standard upland cotton — the cheapest grade. ATTRUE uses only certified Supima.

✓ Look for: Supima, Pima, or ELS cotton
2
How does it feel right now — before washing?

A low-quality cotton t-shirt that feels soft in the store has almost certainly been chemically finished. That treatment washes out within 5–10 washes. A high-quality Supima cotton shirt feels smooth because the fiber itself is smooth — and stays that way.

⚠ Test: rub the fabric between your fingers firmly
3
How much does it weigh — and is that right for summer?

For a summer t-shirt, 140–180 GSM is the sweet spot. Under 130 GSM is too thin. Over 200 GSM will be too warm. Hold the fabric up to light and check if it goes transparent. Check our size guide for fit guidance too.

✓ Target: 145–175 GSM for summer
4
Does "breathable" mean anything on this label?

Natural cotton fibres absorb up to 8.5% of their weight in moisture. Polyester absorbs 0.4%. That is the real breathability gap — and why Supima cotton t-shirts keep you genuinely cooler all day.

✗ Avoid: "breathable polyester" — it's a contradiction
5
How is it constructed — and will the seams last?

Double-stitched seams resist pulling apart during wear and washing. Single-stitched seams are cheaper and fail faster. Also check the collar: a reinforced rib collar holds its shape through summer; a single-knit collar sags within weeks.

✓ Look for: double-stitched seams, reinforced collar
6
What is the real cost-per-wear — not just the price?

A £15 t-shirt worn 12 times costs £1.25 per wearing. A £45 t-shirt worn 200 times costs £0.23 per wearing. Save even more with our Supima bundle collection.

⚠ Calculate: price ÷ estimated wears = true cost
7
Will it look the same after 50 washes?

High-quality cotton — especially extra-long staple varieties like Supima — holds colour, maintains its weave density, and stays soft through repeated washing. Standard cotton fades, pills, and stiffens.

✓ Choose fabrics rated for colour fastness and pilling resistance
3
Step Three

The Fabric Face-Off

Every summer t-shirt decision ultimately comes down to what the fabric can do. Here is the honest side-by-side between the two most common choices. Ready to choose right? Shop ATTRUE Supima t-shirts or explore our Supima hoodies.

Step Four

The Red Flags — Walk Away From These

🚩
Extremely low price with no quality explanation

A t-shirt cannot be both premium quality and bargain-priced. If no quality justification is given, the quality has been sacrificed.

🚩
Vague fabric claims ("soft feel," "natural look")

Confident brands name their materials specifically. Vague language is almost always disguising synthetic content.

🚩
Single-stitched seams throughout

Single stitching saves manufacturers money and costs you wearable life. Walk around the seams with your fingers.

🚩
See-through fabric held up to light

A t-shirt that goes semi-transparent in sunlight is too thin. It will distort under arms and look worn out within weeks.

🚩
"Moisture-wicking polyester" marketed as summer wear

In everyday life it just means sweat sits on the fabric surface — you feel wet and smell worse, not better.

🚩
No country of origin or material certification

Quality brands are proud of where their materials come from. The absence of this information usually means the supply chain wouldn't hold up to scrutiny.
